Event: Purple Hijab High Tea & Fashion Show

PURPLE HIJAB HIGH TEA & FASHION SHOW 2013

In support of the

Advice Desk for the Abused…

The Purple Hijab High Tea & Fashion Show 2013 will be hosted at the African Sky Room at the Coastlands Hotel, Umhlanga on Sunday 10th March 2013, at 2:30 pm for 3:00 pm.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness to the plight of the victims of Domestic Abuse whilst raising funds for The Advice Desk for the Abused.

The 3rd International Purple Hijab Day, February 13 2013 was a day of reflection on the deaths which have resulted from domestic violence around the world. A purple hijab is an apt reference for this phenomenon. The hijab—or head scarf is a symbol of the modesty and piety associated with Muslim womanhood. Purple is a colour associated with mourning. Hopefully, a purple hijab will bring to mind what is important for us to remember.

International Hair Stylist Shirley Naidoo-Hair Sensations, will bring her skills to the event whilst professional make-up artists will add glamour with their make-up skills.

Designers include seasoned and contemporary designers: NADINE DESIGNS, FUNKY FAIRY, JASMIN’S BRIDAL BOUTIQUE, ZEENY B, FAHEEMA KHAN, AL HIJAB and SUE.LEMANI

Review-A Spring Affair Fashion Show (Boulevard)

Over this past weekend, I was invited to attend A Spring Affair hosted by JSE Couture and MOB Events. The red carpet was rolled up with Boulevard playing host to this fashion event. As it was a girls night out with my friends, we arrived fashionably late after making sure our hair was perfectly put in place, lipgloss and mascara perfectly applied. Wearing a blue dress with gold accessories and a leopard print ankle boot (pictured below),I was ready to see how the night would unfold.

Having arrived just on time for the fashion show, programme director for the night was Eastern Mosaic’s finalist Neetasha Singh in a stunning asymmetrical dress. The show kicked off with a lingerie range by Jacqui from JSE Couture, followed by the rest of the local designers ,Brenda Quin, Carisa Saul ,Thulani Mguni, Senzo, Snerry,Eulender Cele, Ryan Francis, Bridemode, Badr-Riya Henry, Bianca Kim ,Nita Henley and Sarojini Moodley. Designer’s collections included Pastels, denims, floral prints, swimwear and bridal.

As models took to the red carpet, there were many cheers by young male admirers for their favourite local models. Local artists Red Star Cartel and Free Way Society provided the entertainment for the night. A dance competition in the midst of the fashion show got the crowd going as participants freestyled, popped and locked. I am sure I would have dislocated some part of my anatomy had I even attempted to try some of their moves.

Although I didn’t stay to the end as I was on my way to the next event, I was impressed that Durbanites came in their numbers to support the local fashion industry!!!

Winners:Vodacom Durban July 2012-Raceday (Part 2)

With each passing year, designs and ensembles at the Vodacom Durban July only get better .

Whether you are a fashion lover or not, you just had to be impressed with the extravaganza of colour and creativity. Designers did not fail to impress with their creations and added to the days glitz, glamour and excitement.

Due to so many intriguing and stunning designs, I had to create a second blog post.

Featured below are some of the designers and their work:

Having just come back from a 4×4 trip throughout Africa, designer Brenda Quin’s absolutely innovative creation was inspired through the ever changing landscapes. She teamed natural organic buttons with an SPCA jacket, old duvet covers, lave crochet dollies, calico and spare fabric which she tea dyed. The bags were made from old hats and the raffia was created with old cassette tapes. The head dresses were made using an old floral arrangement. Brenda’s design (pictured below) definitely showed that you can make elegant creations from resources available.

Another talented young designer to look out for is Jacqueline Emmanuel of JSE Couture. With immense accolades to her name, this young lady is making her mark in the fashion industy. The inspiration behind her design was a broken paper doll, that was passed on over generations. The dress was made of an old curtain with curtain tape, the bodice which was covered in Origami flowers was made of bubble wrap and plastic. The underskirt was from an old wedding gown and the bag was from her dad when he was 15.The hat represented all things materialistic ,credit cards,a horse, cassette. The Recycled doll with her one missing glove and earring,is living proof that we can reuse and do our part in saving our Mother earth. Wow! now is that not inspirational.

Pictured below is her design for the July which was placed in the top three, pictured here with Jeannie Dee and Simba from Top Billing.

Pictured above is Yajna and Jasheel seen at the July.

Pictured above is Losh and Resh Naidoo.

WINNERS- Vodacom Durban July 2012- Raceday (Part 1)

Winning horse,3 year old Pomodoro stole the show at this years Vodacom Durban July at the Greyville Racecourse on Saturday. Pomodoro ridden by Piere Strydom beat all its competitors in a nail biting finish to clench the coveted title.

The prestigious regional Young Designer Award went to 3rd year DUT student Tammy Sturrock. Her creative ensemble (pictured below) consisted of a two piece outfit printed with green leaves, a beige turban and leather gloves.

The Fashion Challenge Title went to Bloemfontein designer Mmuso Moilopai for her checked ensemble (pictured below) with colour detail in the embroidery.

Top Billing presenter Jeannie Dee was absolutely breathtaking in a Gavin Rajah couture creation.

Local designer Zeeny B of Zeeny B Couture creative ensemble was placed amongst the top ten. For her design she combined handmade paper for the dress and suit with raw silk and tablecloth plastic. The design was embellished with seashells, gemstones, dried flowers and wax seals.
