A/W 2013- Black and White

Black and White is one of 2013′s biggest trend and was extensively flaunted by acclaimed International designers such as Balenciaga, Altuzzaro, Dior and Elie Saab at Paris Fashion Week. Celeb and Stylists alike have already started embracing this style in their own way. I have always been a fan of this classic black and white trend as it can be worn in a multitude of ways during the day or night. This trend can be found in almost every retail store in SA. So, ladies and gents put your fashion foot forward and get shopping!!!

Event: Purple Hijab High Tea & Fashion Show

PURPLE HIJAB HIGH TEA & FASHION SHOW 2013

In support of the

Advice Desk for the Abused…

The Purple Hijab High Tea & Fashion Show 2013 will be hosted at the African Sky Room at the Coastlands Hotel, Umhlanga on Sunday 10th March 2013, at 2:30 pm for 3:00 pm.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness to the plight of the victims of Domestic Abuse whilst raising funds for The Advice Desk for the Abused.

The 3rd International Purple Hijab Day, February 13 2013 was a day of reflection on the deaths which have resulted from domestic violence around the world. A purple hijab is an apt reference for this phenomenon. The hijab—or head scarf is a symbol of the modesty and piety associated with Muslim womanhood. Purple is a colour associated with mourning. Hopefully, a purple hijab will bring to mind what is important for us to remember.

International Hair Stylist Shirley Naidoo-Hair Sensations, will bring her skills to the event whilst professional make-up artists will add glamour with their make-up skills.

Designers include seasoned and contemporary designers: NADINE DESIGNS, FUNKY FAIRY, JASMIN’S BRIDAL BOUTIQUE, ZEENY B, FAHEEMA KHAN, AL HIJAB and SUE.LEMANI

Interview with Bollywood Designer Rohhit Verma

Over the past weekend I had the privilege of meeting and interviewing one of Bollywood’s leading fashion designers Rohhit Verma. Rohhit was in South Africa to showcase his collection at My Fairytale Wedding held at the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment world.

Having designed for many of Bollywood’s leading ladies, Rohhit Verma is also known for his work as an actor in the 2008 blockbuster movie ”Fashion”. He is best known for the Zoom tv show “Style Strip” which he presents, and his stint in the Indian reality show “Big Boss”.

I chatted to him about his love for fashion and was lucky enough to preview some of his creative couture creations . Each ensemble was more breathtaking than the other and you could tell the enormous amount of work put into each design.

Q- How did you get started in the Fashion Industry?

A- Well, my career began in 1996. I come from a family of intellectuals, my father, grandmother and grandfather came from very literate backgrounds and they were not happy about me pursuing a career in fashion, as people at that time did not appreciate fashion designers and the term given to them were tailors. However, I was very strong headed and wanted to do what made me happy so I moved to Bombay.

Q- What is it like working with Bollywood celebs?

A- See, I have always been working with Bollywood celebs. It is always good when someone appreciates your work. It definitely gets designers a lot of publicity but what excites me is dressing a normal girl and turning her into an ultra modern women. The Bollywood stars definitely gets me a lot of business.

Q- Who is your favourite celeb to dress and why?

A- I cannot name any particular person as I may offend someone. All the dresses on the red carpet are actually my favourite.

Q- What can we expect from your collection?

A- My show is tomorrow. It is based on ‘Emotions Behind Abaya’. It is very dramatic and mixed with emotions. Every women wants to look and feel gorgeous but due to certain restrictions, they wear the abaya on top. The collections ranges from ultra simple to ultra glam with drapes of colours on the runway.

Q-What are the Fashion Trends for 2013?

A- Wear your clothes with attitude is what is in right now. Every person must create their own style statement. We fashion forecasters can only give the colour scheme, palettes etc. It all depends on your comfort zone and style is on a one to one basis.

Q- What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?

A- Believe in yourself. Firstly you need to realise that you need to do what makes you happy. Fashion designing sounds very easy but is actually a very vast business from fashion retailing, merchandising, retailing,to illustration and embroidery. It is a blend of both and is a tough life out there.

Q- What can we expect from you for the rest of 2013?

A- I will be doing a fashion show in September this year in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and yes with Bollywood stars. My store in Sandton is all set now. I love South Africa because people really appreciate my art and work. I hope more South Africans will be wearing more of Rohhit Verma designs in the future.

Product Review- BB Cream

Recently everyone has been raving about BB creams, but what exactly is a BB cream many would ask???

Well, basically a BB cream (Blemish Balm or Blemish Base), is a cream that has been widely used in Asia. The cream is an all in one facial cosmetic product that can be used as a serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation and sunblock.

There are many different BB creams available (Bobbi Brown, Garnier, Maybelline and many others). Since woman worldwide were going crazy about the product,  I decided to test out the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream.

I noticed instant results when I used the cream, it immediately left my skin feeling smooth with a glowy base and foundation was not needed. After using the product for a week my skin was more evened out as it is also a tinted moisturizer. The Garnier BB cream comes in light, medium and dark. The Garnier BB Cream shows immediate results so if you want an even skin tone or hydrated skin , you should give it a try. It certainly does leave your skin looking more healthy and is affordable as compared to the other BB creams .

Time to Exfoliate

If you want your skin looking radiant, soft and smooth then exfoliation is the answer. Exfoliation is the removal of dry dead cells from the skin, it can help with clogged pores, dry skin and hyperpigmentation. When you eradicate dry skin cells, new cells will be produced and your skin becomes more soft and healthy. As skin ages, the skin’s natural exfoliation process slows down which accumulates more dry skin cells, therefore an increase in exfoliation is essential.

RECOMMENDED EXFOLIATION PRODUCTS:

*Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System

*Neutrogena Deep Clean Invigorating Foaming Scrub

OR

You can make your own exfoliation scrub at home.

HOMEMADE RECIPES:

*Take equal parts of sugar and olive oil and mix it, thereafter apply it to you skin and gently massage your skin in circular motions, then rinse with lukewarm water.

*The combination of sugar and honey in equal parts is also a popular choice by many.

*An almond oil and baking soda combination is also excellent.

*Coffee is also recommended as a great exfoliant.

NB: IF YOUR SKIN BECOMES RED OR TINY PIMPLES DEVELOP, THE REASON MIGHT BE DUE TO OVER EXFOLIATION OR AN INGREDIENT IN THE PRODUCT THAT DOES NOT AGREE TO YOUR SKIN. IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DERMATOLOGIST.

Trends- 2013 Colour of the Year……….

For many of us, 2013 is the year that inspires change. Therefore the Pantone Colour Institute (US Colour Experts) have chosen elegant EMERALD GREEN as the colour of the year. With Tangerine Tango dominating most of the runway shows last year, the elegant emerald green promises to exude a sense of harmony and creativity this year. Celebs like Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Lopez have already been sporting the hottest colour of the year. I look forward in viewing the creative ensembles of our talented local designers at SA Fashion Week later this year.

Red Carpet- Golden Globes 2013

The 70th annual Golden Globes Awards was held in Los Angeles, California last night. Although more relaxed that the Oscars, the prestigious Red Carpet Event did not fail to impress on the fashion forefront with many celebs dressed in their finest haute couture creations. Nude dresses seem to be a firm favourite for many of the stars. Oscar de la Renta, Versace, Tom Ford, Christian Dior, Armani Prive and Alexander Mcqueen were the designers of choice by many of the celebs. The following are some Red Carpet Looks.

Tutorial: Miss Bronzee Blue

“Miss Bronzee BluE”

Hi Dolls :)

Since this is my first makeup tutorial , I tried to move away from the ordinary pinks and natural looks to something different. Many people think that bronze and blue eyeshadows are not a great combination, however with proper blending techniques these two colours can look incredibly awesome.

I use all types of products, from Mac, kryolan, Avon to Lakme etc. For this eyeshadow look I used an Arabic makeup palette. Don’t worry if you don’t have the exact products, find eyeshadows that look similar and you good to go .  ;)

What you will need :

Bronze eyeshadow

Blue eyeshadow

Black Kohl

Fake eyelashes

Black eyeliner

Black mascara

White eyeshadow

Gold eyeshadow ( brow bone)

Brushes

EYES:

Apply the bronze eyeshadow to the lid area of your eye , then take an angled brush and with the blue apply to the outer corners of your eye sweeping the blue inwards and stopping in the middle. Apply the gold eyeshadow on your brow bone as a highlighter.

Apply your eyeliner and then with a thin brush apply your white eyeshadow towards the outer corner of your eye ending at the end of your eyebrow(it should b a diagonal line). Lastly apply your Kohl eyeliner to your waterline and fake eyelashes for a more dramatic look.

LIPS:

I used a soft pink lipgloss (Givenchy) to complete the look.
